10 Ways to Develop Your Psychic and Mediumship Abilities

Unfortunately, many of us stop using these natural abilities as we grow up. If you’ve ever had a parent dismiss your intuitive hunches or extrasensory perceptions, you’ve learned to block these out over time. The good thing is that with practice, you can strengthen these skills. They can then guide you and bring clarity to life’s big and small decisions. Psychic phenomena comes down to our natural connection to everything and everyone around us. Because you’re already connected to the energetic field that everything comes from - including you - you always have some level of access to other information within this one field.

Your five physical senses - sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing - can only pick up on certain frequencies of information. Your brain translates this information in a way that you later interpret with words or feelings. 

But there’s much more information in the universe that vibrates beyond the range of our known “physical” frequencies. After all, the atoms that make up your body are made up mostly of empty space! We often refer to intuition when we’re speaking about a quick hunch or a gut feeling. Psychic abilities often describe things like reading other people’s energy or thoughts, reading auras, peeking into the future, or look at past lives. Mediumship refers to the ability to communicate with spirit - whether deceased loved ones, guides, or angels. 

All of these allow you to tap into the field from which you receive extrasensory information. In a way, they all function in the same manner: your energy connects to the information that’s contained in the larger energy field. 

Developing any of these abilities is about attuning your body to this field – whether you call it God, Spirit, quantum field, source, or energy. So here are 10 ways to reconnect with these innate abilities so you can feel more clarity and confidence each day.

10 ways to hone your psychic abilities

1) Release limiting beliefs and fears

What do you believe about developing your psychic and intuitive abilities? Do you believe you can’t access them even if you try? Or that they could be dangerous? 

If you believe that tapping into your inner knowledge could harm you or another, you might subconsciously be blocking yourself from accessing these powers. Sometimes there may even be a fear that tapping your intuition could mean making a hard decision you’ve been putting off.

Be willing and open to using your physical abilities. Ask for guidance from your higher self or guides to help you explore these gifts without fear so you can use them to live the life of your dreams.

2) Take mindful pauses throughout the day

All the information you ever need to access is contained in only one moment – the present moment. When you ruminate on the past or worry about the future, you’ve stepped out of that magical present moment. 

Mental chatter can be an obstruction to receiving information that can show up in very subtle ways. To help clear this chatter, take mindful pauses throughout your days. 


This could be as simple as setting a timer every few hours to simply stop. Take a few deep breaths and notice the life within and around you. Doing this trains your brain to be more present so that you can access more subtle layers of knowledge contained in the field.

3) Meditate and access your subconscious mind

In addition to helping you be more present, meditation allows you to enter deeper layers of the mind such as your subconscious. The subconscious contains information that your conscious mind normally doesn’t have access to – such as past lives or data from the future. 

When you meditate, you can connect to the universal energy field because your logical and conditioned mind is out of the way. If you’re willing to be open-minded, you’ll hear and see things that your brain would normally interpret as “not real.” In reality, it’s simply information beyond the five senses.

4) Connect with your deceased loved ones or guides

We all have protective energies around us. These can be in the form of angels, spirit guides, and deceased loved ones. They all want to help us but often can’t intervene without us asking for their help. 

Ask your guides or loved ones for a sign or for help with a specific situation. Then make a note of how that sign came through. The more you acknowledge the signs you receive, the easier it will be for you to pick up on them next time.

5) Read other people’s energy before meeting them

When you’re planning to meet someone for the first time – whether online or in person - tune into their energy perhaps by looking at a photo of them. What insights do you get about their personality or history without reading about them? 

Make a note of these before your meeting. Once you actually meet them, compare “the reality” to your initial hunches. You may be surprised at how many things you picked up on that turned out to be correct.

You could even try this with objects. Touch an object that belongs to someone you don’t know very well (with their permission of course) and see what impressions you get. Then have them tell you more about the object and confirm your findings.

6) Take note of coincidences

For a week, take a note of things that happen throughout each day that seem to be fortuitous “coincidences.” Perhaps the song you heard on the radio or the page you opened a book to was the answer to something you were wondering earlier. 

Maybe you just “happened to” meet someone who mentioned a tip that helped you make a decision you’ve been uncertain about. All of these things are examples of your soul tapping into the larger field of information. The more you see how you already do this, the more often these synchronicities will keep coming.

7) Be aware of the times you listen to your intuition

When you’re having a hard time choosing between two alternate options, envision yourself choosing each. First, take a few minutes to visualize yourself choosing option A. Write down the sensations you feel in your body when you visualize this choice. Then do the same thing with option B. 

Which option “feels right”? Which one makes your body slightly more tense and constricted than the other? Go with the decision that feels right in your body. Keep track of these decisions to see how listening to your intuition turns out.

8) List the best decisions you’ve made in the past

To develop your psychic abilities, you have to learn to trust yourself. This can be easier said than done...so here’s a simple way to strengthen your self-trust: Think about the decisions you’ve made in the past week, month, and year that have proved to be the most beneficial. 


What has caused you to make these decisions? Did you know why you were making these decisions or were most of them made intuitively? As you review the decisions you made right, you strengthen self-trust. This helps you feel confident about relying on your intuition for even the biggest life decisions.

9) Cleanse and open your chakras

Your chakras are seven energy centers that run from the top of your head to the base of your spine. They’re always receiving and sending out information. When your chakras are clear and in balance, it’s much easier to be aware of the information that wants to come through to you.

Tune into your body to see what it needs and trust its answers. Fuel it with nourishing foods and a consistent exercise routine. Fuel your mind with educational or inspirational content. Fuel your spirit with meditation and your favorite spiritual practices.
